Course 1: English Writing and Research Seminar: Fall 2022

Teacher: Professor Haley Stoner

Course Description: This course offers training in composition and research skills. Students will write in a variety of modes, including rhetorical analysis and literary analysis. The English Writing and Research Seminar helps to prepare student applications by developing academic resumes and workshopping creative pieces. The class will analyze academic journal articles, institutional documents, newspapers, government documents, research studies, and more. Students will work on individual research projects including several writing components such as annotated bibliography entries, analysis, and implications. Credibility and variety of sources, critical thinking, proper crediting of sources through MLA style, and ethical presentation of research are among the skills this course develops. No textbook is required for this course. This course is suitable for committed students in 7th – 12th grade levels.

This 14-week course will be taught via Zoom on Tuesdays from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM CT.

Course 2: English Studies: Young Writers Fall 2022 Seminar

Teacher: Professor Haley Stoner

Course Description:  This seminar builds skills in writing, analysis, and communication through the study of multiple genres and themed units. These units and texts will differ from those offered in the Summer 2022 seminar; new and returning students are welcome. Grammar, diction, structure, mechanics, style, vocabulary, and revision will be practiced through guided composition. Students will engage with a free, online repository of texts through Common Lit to analyze the language and deepen multi-layered interpretive skills for reading. The course will guide students through drafting and revision of written responses. The writing skills that students develop throughout the semester will culminate in a revised critical essay. No textbook is required for this course. This seminar is suitable for committed students in 4th-6th grade levels.

This 14-week course will be taught via Zoom on Tuesdays from 4:30 PM -5:30 PM CT.
