Course 1 – English Writing and Research Seminar: Fall 2021
This 14-week course will be taught via Zoom on Wednesdays from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM CST from September 1 – December 8. Seats available for this course: 10-20
This course offers a dual focus in training for both creative writing and nonfiction research skills. In the opening weeks, students will learn and practice strategies for creative prose and poetry, culminating in the option to submit work for the NSHSS Creative Writing Scholarship or similar competition. The NSHSS national scholarship is open to high school students (9th-12th grade) and winners receive awards of $2,000 USD. Younger students can use this course to develop work for writing portfolios to submit for future competitions. The English Writing and Research Seminar helps to prepare student applications by developing academic resumes and workshopping creative pieces. Students will also study literature and build analytical skills during this part of the course.
The second section of this course trains students in research. The class will analyze academic journal articles, institutional documents, newspapers, government documents, research studies, and more. Students will work on individual research projects including several writing components such as annotated bibliography entries, analysis, and implications. Credibility and variety of sources, critical thinking, proper crediting of sources through MLA style, and ethical presentation of research are among the skills this course develops. No textbook is required for this course. This course is suitable for committed students in 7th – 12th grade levels.

Course 2 – English Studies: Young Writers Fall 2021 Seminar
This 14-week course will be taught via Zoom on Wednesdays from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM CST from September 1 – December 8. Seats available for this course: 10-20
In this course, students will complete themed units and an exploration of genres, demonstrating skills through focused discussion and written response. These units and texts will differ from those offered in the Summer 2021 seminar; new and returning students are welcome. Diagnostics at the beginning of the course will facilitate individualized instruction, and the small class size will offer an intensive environment designed to challenge each student. Grammar, diction, structure, mechanics, style, vocabulary, and revision will be practiced through guided composition. Students will engage with a free, online repository of texts through Common Lit to analyze the language and deepen multi-layered interpretive skills for reading. Short stories and nonfiction pieces will be assigned by the instructor based on student reading level and interest. In emphasizing hallmarks of effective communication, this seminar gives students a competitive edge for all coursework. The writing skills that students develop throughout the semester will culminate in a revised critical essay. This course is suitable for committed students in 4th-6th grade levels.
